The Canso Canal, built in 1955, allows the unobstructed flow of marine traffic between George’s Bay to the north and Chedabucto Bay to the south. Every year, over 2200 vessels carrying nearly 2 million tonnes of cargo pass through the canal. The canal is owned by the Government of Canada through Fisheries and Oceans Canada and operated by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) for the Atlantic Region.
SHM Canada carried out a preliminary assessment of the canal walls in 2017 and in 2018 was hired by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) to carry out a wall study comprising Structural Health Monitoring, surveying, visual inspection, and geotechnical investigation. Based on this study, SHM Canada recommended both short-term and long-term solutions to ensure the continued safe and dependable operation of the facility.
Long term monitoring is currently underway.
Combine cutting-edge structural health monitoring with tried-and-tested assessment strategies.
